The DCDrama Magazine, LLC (the umbrella which houses the Madinah Records label) is a branch of Ruffin2 Productions, a D.C. based company established in 1991. The production company grew out of Sandra Ruffin’s production efforts in support of the anti-apartheid movement while a student at Harvard Law School in the early 1980’s. In 1993 Ruffin2Productions produced its first underground film “Real Life Story”. The film featured local actors from the D.C. metropolitan area, including a cameo appearance from legendary Go-Go percussionist “GO-GO Mickey”(Rare Essence Band).
During the decades of the 1970s and ‘80s, the genre of music which is GO-GO dominated the D.C. musical underground. The DCDrama concept and brand was impassioned and influenced by GO-GO culture. Ruffin2Productions designed and sold tee shirts promoting Real Life Story which contained the “DCDrama” logo. The “Real Life Story” shirts were picked- up and widely retailed by the then-famous D.C. clothier, Designers Discount Trading Post (DDTP). Ruffin2Productions made another contribution to underground film in 1998 with a 5-vignette film called “The Things We Go Through”; the film featured a 12-track soundtrack produced by Newark New Jersey’s, Terron Somerville. The exposure and distribution challenges that circumscribe and sometimes define the “Underground” movement spawned the creation of The DCDrama Magazine in 2004. Since its creation, The DCDrama Magazine has been committed to assisting underground artists in meeting those challenges– It is “The Home of The Underground Arts Movement”.
